Individual Therapy at The Retreat
It can feel confusing when setting out to begin therapy. It’s normal for all of us to feel worried, sad, upset, or have difficult emotions from time-to-time. For most people though, these feelings are only temporary and are resolved without causing any long-term problems. However, for some people, these negative feelings can become worse over time and lead to a mental health problem.
Our experienced counsellors, psychotherapists and psychologists at The Retreat can help find the right therapy for you. There are many different types of counselling and psychotherapy to choose from. Our aim is to use the type of counselling or psychotherapy that is most appropriate to each individual client, based on the client’s needs at the time.
This page explains a little about the various individual therapies we can offer. Further information can be found by following the links in the short descriptions provided.

Cognitive Analytic Therapy (CAT)
Cognitive Analytic Therapy
CAT is a relationship-based therapy. CAT is considered to be a focussed and dynamic therapy, with particular emphasis on relationship patterns that have unintentionally come to be unhelpful or stuck. If you would like to know more about CAT or what to expect from your therapy at The Retreat then click on this link.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
CBT is based on the theory that thoughts, feelings, our behaviour and how our body feels are all connected. If we better understand these, or make meaningful changes to one of these, we can alter the others to improve our holistic wellbeing. The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) recommends CBT in the treatment of anxiety disorders, including panic attacks, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder and depression, as well as other mood disorders. CBT can be helpful in treating many other conditions, including fatigue and pain, sleep difficulties and anger.

At The Retreat, we will always think with you about your expectations and preferences and tailor your therapy to you.

Psychoanalytic psychotherapy has an understanding of the mind that assumes the existence and central importance of unconscious mental processes and recognises that problems in the present may have their roots in past experiences.
The relationship that develops between the client and their therapist is central in understanding these past experiences and their influence on a person’s inner world and patterns of relating.
